I was deeply saddened to learn of the passing of former Barrie mayor Janice Laking.
For more than 50 years, Janice was a dedicated champion of Barrie and its residents. She devoted her life to serving her community, first as an educator and later through her years on city council and 12 years as mayor. Her commitment to Barrie was not simply a chapter of her life; it was truly a part of who she was.
Janice helped shape the Barrie we know today. Her contributions extended well beyond City Hall. She was a strong supporter of health care, policing, library services, the arts and Georgian College, and played an important role in helping build the institutions and infrastructure that have helped our community grow. She also helped secure the rail corridor that would eventually bring GO Transit service to Barrie.
What always stood out to me was that Janice never stopped caring about the people of this community. Even from her retirement residence, she would call me to advocate for seniors who needed assistance with federal matters. She remained a champion for her neighbours and a voice for those who needed someone in their corner.
Janice’s service to Barrie was extraordinary, but her legacy is also found in the countless people and organizations she supported, encouraged and advocated for over the decades.
Barrie is a better community because Janice Laking cared so deeply about it and gave so much of herself to its people.
My thoughts and deepest condolences are with Janice’s family, friends and everyone who had the privilege of knowing her and working alongside her. She will be greatly missed, but her remarkable legacy of service to Barrie will live on.
