FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Oct. 21, 2026: Barrie South-Innisfil MP John Brassard will join veterans, Canadian Armed Forces members, Royal Canadian Legion members and volunteers on Friday, Oct. 23, to officially launch Central Ontario’s 2026 Poppy Campaign.
The ceremony is scheduled for 11 a.m. at Royal Canadian Legion Branch 147, located at 410 St. Vincent St. in Barrie. Running from Oct. 24 through Remembrance Day on Nov. 11, this year’s campaign holds historic significance as it coincides with the Legion’s 100th anniversary and debuts a standardized national schedule.
“Wearing a poppy is a simple but meaningful way to remember the Canadians who have served our country, those who continue to serve and those who made the ultimate sacrifice,” said Brassard. “As the Legion celebrates its 100th anniversary, I encourage everyone to wear a poppy, honour the sacrifices made for our freedom, and support the veterans, serving members, and families who have given so much to Canada.”
The launch comes at a time of profound grief for Canada’s military community following the devastating October 17 training area grass fire at Canadian Forces Base Wainwright in Alberta. The tragedy claimed the lives of four Canadian Armed Forces members and left 39 others injured, many critically.
“My heart goes out to the families, friends and fellow service members mourning this unimaginable loss, and to those fighting to recover from their injuries,” Brassard said. “This heartbreaking tragedy underscores the inherent dangers of military preparation.
“We must recognize the immense sacrifices made by the men and women who serve in our Armed Forces, ensuring they and their families receive the absolute best care and support.”
Traditional poppy boxes and touchless Pay Tribute donation terminals will be available at locations throughout the community, with all donations directly supporting local veterans and their families through emergency housing, medical equipment and essential aid. Through a partnership with Amazon Canada, Canadians can also have lapel poppies delivered straight to their homes, ensuring access even in areas without a local Legion branch.
Residents can also support the campaign online at mypoppy.ca by creating a digital poppy.
